The Liberation War of Bangladesh
Our liberation is the greatest achievement (অর্জন) in our national life. We had been under Pakistani rule for almost twenty-five years. But the discrimination, oppression, and suppression (দমন) of the West Pakistani rulers led us to wage the Liberation War. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman leads the struggle for freedom. After the historical speech virtually declaring the war of liberation and calling upon the Bangalee people to fall upon their enemies, the Pakistani rulers began to get prepared to attack and kill the Bangalee people. In the process, they began to bring huge numbers of arms from West Pakistan secretly. However, as part of their evil plan, on 25 March 1971, they suddenly attacked the innocent sleeping Bangalee people and killed them most cruelly. Bangabandhu was arrested by the Pakistani rulers on that night. The next day the heroic sons on this soil fell upon their enemies in retaliation of the Pakistan army’s barbarous killing. Gradually the war turned into a full-fledged one. People from all walks of life took part in the war responding to the call and order of Bangabandhu. Colonel M.A.G. Osmani was the Commander-in-chief of that war. Definitely, the Liberation War was a great event. We achieved freedom through this war at cost of about thirty lakhs of lives and the chastity of two lakhs of our mothers and sisters. We protested all kinds of wrong-doing committed by the Pak rulers. It symbolizes a great protest against wrong-doing. A nation cannot make progress without being independent. Colonial rulers never want the real progress (উন্নতি) of the subjugated (অবদমিত) people. In order to fulfill the five basic needs of the citizens of a country and lead them to the way of development, a nation must be independent.
