Earthquake
Earthquake causes a great disaster (বিপর্যয়). It is a great natural disaster. It is a sudden (হঠাৎ) movement of a part of the earth’s surface (উপরিভাগ) caused by deep crack (ফাটল) in the earth or by volcanic eruption (উদ্গীরণ). Some regions of the earth are prone (প্রবণ) to earthquakes while other are comparatively safe from this natural disaster. Some countries like Japan, Iran, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, China, etc. are frequently (বারংবার) hit by earthquakes. Houses and bridges in these countries are, therefore, built shock-proof. Forecast (পূর্বাভাস) regarding the occurrence of earthquake in not possible. So, people cannot take necessary preparation for this natural disaster. A severe earthquake causes widespread destruction of houses and properties. People are crushed (নিষ্পিষ্ট) under the broken houses. Often several quakes hit a place at short intervals (বিরতি). So, after a quake people live in tents (তাঁবু) on open fields. When a severe (তীব্র) quake hits a populous city, thousands of people are skilled and injured. Many people get trapped (আটকা পড়া) in the broken houses and it takes days to rescue (উদ্ধার করা) them. The only way to get rid of the ravages (ধ্বংশ) of this natural disaster is to build houses, bridges, and roads in such a way that they can resist (প্রতিরোধ করা) the tremors (কম্পন/শিহরণ). Alarmed by the recurrence of quakes, experts have called for the development of an earthquake-resistant building code which can save the lives of city dwellers. It is a must to reduce loss.
