The Shat Gambuj Mosque

The Shat Gambuj Mosque is one of the greatest beautiful mosques in Bangladesh. It was built in Bagerhat district in the middle of 15th century by the earliest torch bearer of Islam, Ulugh Khan Jahan Alu during the reign of Sultan Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah. This mosque is situated on the eastern bank of a vast water tank, clustered around by heavy foliage of a low lying country side near the seacoast. The roof of the mosque is supported by 77 squat domes, including 7 charchala or four-sided domes in the middle row. The vast prayer hall is provided with 11 arched doorways on east and 7 each on north and south for ventilation and light. It has 7 longitudinal aisles and 11 deep bays by a forest of slender stones columns. The arches are six feet in thickness, have slightly tapering hollow and round walls. The interior and the exterior patterns of the mosque are plain. But the Interior western wall of the mosque was beautifully decorated with terracotta flowers and foliage. It was used as prayer hall and was also used as the court of Khan Jahan Ali. In fact, it has become architectural beauties of Bangladesh
