A Farmer and a Nobleman

One day, a farmer was taking some sacks of wheat to a mill. The mill was a few kilometres away. On the way, the horse stumbled and one of the sacks fell onto the ground. It was too heavy for the farmer to lift and there was nobody around to help him. He was at a loss. Meanwhile, he saw a horseman coming towards him. His heart jumped. As the rider came nearer, the farmer recognised him. He was the nobleman who lived in a great house at the top of the hill. The farmer thought that it was not proper for him to seek help from a person of such high rank, so he dared not approach the rider. The nobleman, being very generous, stopped in front of the farmer, got down from his horse and came forward willingly to help.

He held one end of the sack and asked the farmer to hold the other. Together they lifted the sack and placed it once again on the horse’s back. The farmer took off his cap and wanted to offer thanks, but the nobleman smiled and said it was simply his duty as a human being. He advised the farmer to help others in distress whenever possible.

The farmer felt deeply grateful. As the nobleman rode away, the farmer realised how a small act of kindness could change someone’s day. He continued his journey with renewed hope. When he reached the mill, he shared the incident with the miller, who praised the nobleman’s humility. The farmer returned home thinking that true nobility lies not in status, but in compassion. From that day on, he made it a habit to help anyone in need, remembering the nobleman’s wise words.
