The Freedom of the Press in Democracy

↬ Freedom of Speech Necessary in a Free Society

↬ Freedom of Press

Introduction : The press is a very important mass media in the modern world. Especially in the modern democratic world for public consciousness, the press is playing an important role. The present world is known as a global village. The press is the best way to know about this whole globe. Without this, for understanding our own country and political system, there is no alternative to the press. Without freedom of the press, it will not be able to give real news. As a result, freedom of the press is necessary for any democratic country.

Meaning of Freedom of Press : Freedom of the press is a very widely discussed issue in the modern world. By freedom of the press, we mean the freedom of publications by media, especially in the case of newspapers.

Meaning of Democracy : The concept of democracy originated from the Greek words 'demos' and 'kratos', which mean people and power respectively. Democracy thus means the power of the people.

Importance of Freedom of Press : No democratic system can exist without freedom of the press. Freedom of the press is an important pre-requisite for a democratic system, as:

1. Organising People’s Views : For organising people's views, freedom of the press is very important. When the press is free, it can give people the real news so they can make the right decisions and be organised for real objectives.

2. Expression of Public Opinion : In a modern governing system, public opinion is a very important issue. For the existence of any state, the articulation of public opinion is a crying need. The press is the primary way to articulate public opinion. As a result, without freedom of the press, none will be able to articulate public opinion effectively.

3. Ensuring People’s Consciousness : Without people's consciousness about their rights and duties, society will not progress in a proper way. The press can ensure such kind of consciousness among the people of the country.

4. Securing Human Rights : No society can develop without securing human rights. For ensuring these human rights, the press can play a vital role.

5. Development of the Society : For the development of society, freedom of the press also plays an important role because the press can highlight the real situation when it is free.

6. Reducing Corruption : The press is the mirror of society. It gives the true picture of society. Especially in the modern world, the press is very alert and conscious about corruption. So, when the press is free, it can give the real news of society, and the authorities can take proper measures against corruption.

7. Driving the State and Government : In the modern world, the press is known as the ‘Fourth Estate’. For the development of any state, there is no alternative to freedom of the press.

8. Articulation of National Goals : Every state has some objectives and views for articulation. Especially, every state wants to ensure development and welfare for its people. A free press can guide the state in this direction and fulfill the will of the nation in a short period.

Problems of Freedom of Press : Though freedom of the press is essential, irresponsible journalism or press freedom can create some problems in the modern world, such as:

1. Wrong Information : For the sake of freedom, the press can sometimes publish news without verifying real documents; this type of wrong information creates harmful conditions at different times.

2. Instability : When the press provides a large amount of unverified information, it causes instability in society. This is also a vital problem relating to press freedom.

3. Irresponsibility : In modern times, the press is not responsible at all times. Taking advantage of freedom, media outlets sometimes publish irresponsible news. This type of irresponsibility and misinformation causes great harm to society and the nation.

Conclusion : Freedom of the press is very important in the modern world. Without freedom of the press, the state and society are under threat. For the welfare of society and the development of a democratic system, no one can deny the importance of freedom of the press. Modern democracy is entirely meaningless without the freedom of the press.

A press is the symbol of a free people. An independent, well-informed press is a powerful check on arbitrary governments and irresponsible administrators. Newspapers are agents of publicity which bring to the notice of the people acts of injustice, oppression, or maladministration that would otherwise have remained hidden from public notice.

Newspapers and journals make a very good contribution to the nation so that they may function quite effectively and efficiently. Hence, they deserve freedom to highlight facts and events impartially. A democratic country cannot run without ensuring freedom of the press. As we see society through the eyes of journalists, we are able to see how the inner happenings of society are brought to light for necessary measures.

Nowadays, it is difficult for the press to be truly free. Either a newspaper is controlled by financial magnates and must voice their views, or it is the mouthpiece of a political party and must think as the party directs, or it is under the thumb of the government, in which case its usefulness is reduced. Whoever controls it necessarily limits its freedom by their own needs and requirements. In America, great newspapers are in the hands of powerful financial syndicates; in England, they are in the hands of capitalists; in Russia, they are in the hands of the government. Of course, it is maintained with some reason that a people’s government has a greater right to control a newspaper than a private individual or organisation. But freedom of the press in each case depends on the way it reflects the will and purpose of the people as a whole.

It is a burning issue how freedom of the press can be ensured. Legislation should be the guarantee of the press against interference by the government. The press should come forward with a focused look on matters of public interest. Independent-minded editors should have the right to free expression of opinions and unhampered publication of news, subject only to the limitation that they do not publish abuse. Real freedom of the press is ensured by exercising authentic democratic rights and economic emancipation. If people are guaranteed freedom from want and from the fear of unemployment, they can be fearless critics of administrative misdeeds.

Freedom of the press is the essence of human expression rights. It is a sacred right which should be guarded and protected. Governments should ensure the security and financial patronage of the press authority. Editors should give priority to public interest and the constructive development of mass opinion on national issues.
